About this member

Type of activity:

Private utility company, the exclusive concessionnaire to generate, transmit, distribute, sell, import and export of electricity in Macau.

Background:
Formed in 1972, C.E.M. has two main groups of shareholders who together hold 84% of the company's shares: the Sino-French group (with 42%) consisting mainly of Suez and NWS Holdings Limited and the Sino-Portuguese group (with 42%) in which the biggest shareholder is EDP - Energias de Portugal. China Power International Holding Ltd holds 6%. The Macau S.A.R Government holds 8% and the remaining 2% is distributed among eight hundred local shareholders.
Description:
The actual capacity of CEM’s generation consists of three power stations located respectively in the Macau City namely Macau Power Station (CMC) and two on the Coloane Island namely Coloane A Power Station (CCA) and Coloane B Power Station (CCB). Together, CEM has a total installed capacity of 472 MW.

The predominant type of generation technology deployed is the low speed diesel generator. In fact, this kind of generating units make up of 49% of total capacity installed and generate as much as 91% of total electricity production in 2007. The Technology used in CCB is Combined Cycle (each combined cycle has two gas turbines and one steam turbine), which is substantially less polluting than the technology of generators that equipped the CCA. This represents a very important advance in the field of environmental protection. The construction of a sludge incinerator is another realization of technology being used in pursuit of environmental protection.

The installation of Selective Catalytic Reduction system in all the Diesel generators of lower voltage installed in CCA, has been seen as another significant step in reducing environmental impact. The installation of this system permits a substantial reduction of nitrogen oxides and particulates emitted, to levels well below the limits imposed to similar technologies and combustibles.

Improved and expanded services of the company, along with environmental development have been the major pillars of a vision of the company centered on customers. The company looks for every way to satisfy the needs of its customers and render excellent service quality, while at the same time being an active partner in the contribution for the success of the policies of the MSAR Government.
